Prince Alphonso is clearly out of his depth. The risk of injury to the horse is more or less as lethal to the rider. While they are not wearing armour, which had not yet been developed in the early thirteenth century, the weight of the chain mail must still have been significant enough to make it difficult for a boy to stand and run if he came off his horse.
