The Mezquita Cristo de la Luz really does have something like a cellar, although I’m not sure what the original Islamic architect intended it for.
Some medieval Mosques employed a cellar as part of an elaborate system of air-conditioning, using heated oil in winter and cool air in summer. This certainly would have been beneficial in Toledo, which suffers from both extremes.
